Ukrainian and Russian War Refugees Assistance Program

The crisis in Spartanburg County

Ukrainian and Russian (who demonstrated against Putin’s war) War Refugee families are arriving here in Spartanburg County and they are in desperate need of help.  Currently Mary and Martha Services is the only organization that is providing Humanitarian Assistance for War Refugees that arrive in the Spartanburg area. Since March 30th we have received 10 requests for assistance. These new arrivals have informed us that many more families are preparing to make their way to Spartanburg.

These War Refugees are arriving with only what little they could bring when they fled their homes in Ukraine a few weeks ago.  They are blessed if they have a suitcase full of personal items and important papers.  They’re coming with the hope of being able to live out this war in safety and peace here in America.  No one can determine what the time frame for this war will be in Ukraine, but it seems it may continue for quite some time.

For the last five years Mary and Martha Services has had the opportunity and privilege to serve the Ukrainian Community in the Upstate.  We have served them through assisting many newly arriving immigrant families with household items that helped them make their house into a home.  MMS also provided ESL classes during this time.  These people know we care and have the best interest at heart for them and their culture. We have found them to be hard working, energetic, honest people and a real benefit to our community.

Displaced people, the homeless, and refugees are those Mary and Martha Services is committed to serving and War Refugees qualify as all three. They need so much of what we take for granted. Everything that makes a house into a home; basic furniture, beds, linens, kitchen and dining items, bathroom and toiletry essentials, and cleaning supplies.

Since the war began in Ukraine we have been helping more and more War Refugees as they arrive in the Upstate area of South Carolina. We have found they have so many needs as they begin a new life here in America.  As well as seeking to provide household essentials, Mary and Martha Services has created a Community Resource Information packet to help these families find available and reasonable services, such as; medical care, immigration legal services, clothes for their children and themselves, and much more.

If you want to help these War Refugees but don’t know where to start, this is your chance. There are so many ways you can make a difference in these people’s lives. From supporting us monetarily, to getting personally involved in helping these people establish their homes, we can find the right place for you to help.
